PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Who is this course for?

Anyone aged 18 or over who wants to get into healthcare, someone who is seeking to change their profession as well as a person who is currently working as a carer and would like to undergo professional training.

The upcoming new Malaysia Aged Healthcare Act stated it is compulsory for all care givers undergone a proper care giver training.

This qualification addresses work primarily in residential facilities under direct or regular supervision within clearly defined organisation guidelines and service plans:
These workers:
  • Carry out activities to maintain personal care and/or other activities of living for people in an aged care setting.
  • Carry out activities related to an individualised plan.
  • Report directly to a supervisor and are not responsible for other worker.

The Individual Support (Ageing) qualification reflects the role of an individual in a residential and/ or community setting. They will be able to provide person centred support to people who require care in an aged care facility, or require care for some other reason, for example, a disability.

ARG Health has partnered with a global Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to provide an Australian qualification in Individual Support (Ageing).

​Entry Requirement

SPM or O Level: Five Credits (Science,Maths and 3 other subjects)
​Interested students will have an initial interview with ARG to assess their English level. 
​The course is in English and each candidate must have an IELTS of 5.5 or higher. 

Intake

18 September 2017
​Students will be interviewed in August.

Duration

The qualification consists of 7 core units and 6 electives. Each unit involves online study and work placement for practical experience. Work placements are in arranged in private home @ AIM Healthcare Center where students will be observed and assessed. There are no final exams and students will be assessed on case studies, written work and workplace observations.

(i) Online Theory course.  It will take at least 6-8 weeks (and up to 6 months). In this time all students have access to SMS, email and phone support with a tutor. Medium is in English.
and 
(ii) 120 practical hours @ AIM Healthcare center. ​The practical component of the course is carried out in the facility. Worksheets are provided for this. If the qualified tutor is not assessing the student, they must send videos online.

Course outcome

Students will gain factual, technical, procedural, and entry level theoretical knowledge of the practices required to provide individual support. Upon successful completion of the Australian Units of Competency, the student will receive a “Statement of Attainment”. Upon completion of practical training, the student will receive a Certificate stating they have completed both parts of the course.

In other words, on successful completion of the course, candidates will receive a letter of attainment from the Registered Training Organization (RTO) of Australia. stating that they have completed the units of study, plus 120 hours of practical experience.

The skills in these units must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

​Programme Structure

7 core units and 6 electives

Core Units
Students must complete all of the following Core Units:

(1) 015 ​Provide Individual support
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to organise, provide and monitor support services within the limits established by an individualised plan. The individualised plan refers to the support or service provision plan developed for the individual accessing the service and may have many different names in different organisations. This unit applies to workers who provide support under direct or indirect supervision in any community services or health context.

(2) 023 Support Independence and well being
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide individualised services in ways that support independence, as well as, physical and emotional wellbeing. This unit applies to workers in a range of community services context of an established individualised plan. 

(3) 005 Communicate and work in health or community services
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, management and other industry providers. This unit applies to a range of health and community service contexts where workers may communicate face-to-face, in writing or using digital media and work with limited responsibility under direct or indirect supervision.


(4) 001 Work with diverse people
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations.

(5) 011 Work legally and ethically
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and work within the legal and ethical frameworks that apply to an individual job role. This unit applies to community services and health workers who play a proactive role in identifying and meeting their legal and ethical responsibilities. 

(6) 001 Recognise body systems
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work with basic information about the human body and to recognise and promote ways to maintain healthy functioning of the body. This unit applies to any worker who needs to use and interpret information that includes references to client anatomy and physiology.

(7) 002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for a worker to participate in safe work practices to ensure their own health and safety, and that of others in work environments that involve caring directly for clients. It has a focus on maintaining safety of the workers, the people being supported and other community members.


​Elective Units
Students must complete 6 elective units in Ageing specialisation (numerous to choose from).

(1) IS001 - Contribute to ongoing skills development using a strengths-based approach
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assist with supporting the ongoing skill development of a person with disability. It involves following and contributing to an established individual plan and using a positive, strengths-based approach. This unit applies to individuals who work with people with disability in a range of community services and health contexts. Work performed requires some discretion and judgement and may be carried out under regular direct or indirect supervision.

(2) IS002 - Follow established person-centred behaviour supports 
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement behaviour support strategies outlined in an individualised behaviour support plan for a person with disability. This unit applies to workers in varied disability services contexts. Work performed requires some discretion and judgement and may be carried out under regular direct or indirect supervision.

(3) IS003 - Support community participation and social inclusion
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assist with supporting people with disability in community participation and social inclusion using a person-centred approach. This involves enabling people to make choices to maximise their participation in various community settings, functions and activities to enhance psychosocial well-being and lifestyle in accordance with the person’s needs and preferences.This unit applies to workers in varied disability services contexts. Work performed requires some discretion and judgement and may be carried out under regular direct or indirect supervision.

(4) IS007 - Facilitate the empowerment of people with disability
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to facilitate the empowerment of people with disability to deliver rights based services using a person-centred approach. It should be carried out in conjunction with individualised plans. This unit applies to workers in varied disability contexts.

(5) IS004 - Communicate using augmentative and alternative communication strategies 
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to communicate with people who have complex communication needs through effective use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) strategies and systems. AAC refers to methods that replace or supplement speech to address the needs of people whose oral speech skills limit their ability to meet their participation and communication needs. AAC systems comprise communication aids, symbols, strategies, and techniques and methods that may be aided or unaided. This unit applies to disability support work in a variety of contexts. Work performed requires a range of well developed, person-centred skills where some discretion and judgement is required and workers will take responsibility for their own outputs.

(6) RP003 - Reflect on and improve own professional practice 
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to evaluate and enhance own practice through a process of reflection and ongoing professional development. This unit applies to workers in all industry sectors who take pro-active responsibility for their own professional development.
